Father and son golfing pioneers now together in the World Golf Hall of Fame

Willie Park Jr., a two-time winner of the British Open who later went on to make an impact on the sport as a teacher, author, course designer and club designer, will be inducted posthumously into the World Golf Hall of Fame May 6, 2013 at the Induction Ceremony held at the St. Johns Country Convention Center.

Park, who enters the Hall through the Veterans Category, joins his father, Willie Park Sr. The Parks will be the second father and son in the Hall of Fame, along with "Old Tom" Morris and "Young Tom" Morris.

Park Jr., a native of Scotland, won the Open Championships in 1887 at Prestwick and 1889 at Musselburgh, in his home town.

Park Jr. compiled 12 top-10 finishes in golf's oldest major. He was four years old when his father won the Open -- at Prestwick.

He went on to become one of the early pioneers in club and course design, and wrote the first golf instructional book by a professional player, "The Art of Putting," published in 1920.

Park Jr., designed or modified more than 200 courses in Europe, the U.S. and Canada. His three most significant designs are Sunningdale, near London, the Maidstone Golf Club in New York, and Royal Quebec.

Mungo Park, the great-nephew of Willie Park Jr., who serves as the family historian said that his uncle broke ground in professional golf.

"[Park Jr.], possibly more than any other, marked the transition from the old-school caddy and player to the modern professional golfer and businessman," Mungo Park said in a statement through the World Golf Hall of Fame.

Jack Peter, chief operating officer of the Hall of Fame, said having both Parks in the Hall of Fame "is truly fitting."

"The Hall of Fame celebrates the rich history of the game and that story cannot be told without the tremendous contributions of the Park family," Peter said in a statement.

Park Jr., will join Fred Couples and Ken Venturi in being inducted next May. A fourth member of the Class of 2013 will be announced soon.

Park died in 1925 at the age of 61.
