The Greek prosecution service questioned today two finance ministry officials that used to work closely with the former finance minister George Papaconstantinou, who is allegedly responsible for counterfeiting a list of names of people with accounts at HSBC bank in Switzerland that evaded taxation. The two officials worked in Papaconstantinou's office when he was minister from 2009 to 2011.
Last Monday, 71 members of the Greek parliament proposed the creation of a parliamentary commission of enquiry to investigate the alleged role of Papaconstantinou in the possible falsification of names of Greek citizens from the "Lagarde list" who have large bank accounts in Switzerland but have been avoiding paying taxes for years.
?A vote is scheduled to take place within this month in order to determine whether the commission will indeed be implemented as to investigate into whether or not the former minister had been involved in the falsification of an official document and had not acted as he should have done.
The list of names is known to Greeks as the "Lagarde list" after Christine Lagarde who was French finance minister at the time and now heads the IMF. Lagarde had come into possession of the list of 2000 names which had been removed secretly from HSBC bank by an employee.
Due to these recent allegations, Mr. Papaconstantinou was removed from the membership of the socialist Pasok party. However, the former Greek finance minister is denying all these accusations and recently stated to the Greek press that he is innocent and has been framed.
