Apple unveils faster, more powerful iPhone (AP)

CUPERTINO, Calif. ? Apple Inc. unveiled a new iPhone on Tuesday that is faster and more powerful but stops short of a more radical upgrade. It said Sprint customers will now be able to use one.

The new iPhone 4S has an improved camera with a higher-resolution sensor. The processor is faster, which helps run smoother, more realistic action games. It's also a "world phone," which means that Verizon iPhones will be able to useable overseas, just as AT&T iPhones already are.

There had been speculation that Apple would reveal a more radical revision of the phone, an "iPhone 5." The no-show leaves room for speculation that Apple will reveal a new model in less than a year, perhaps one equipped to take advantage of Verizon's and AT&T's new high-speed data networks.

There had also been speculation that Apple would include a chip that could talk to payment terminals at retail stores, turning the iPhone into a "mobile wallet." Competitors are starting to include this capability in their phones, though the payment systems are still immature. Apple made no mention of such a feature in the iPhone 4S.

Apple's stock fell nearly 5 percent.

Apple is including a "personal assistant" application called Siri in the iPhone 4S. It responds to spoken questions and commands such as "Do I need an umbrella today?" It's an advanced version of speech-recognition apps found on other phones.

The new iPhone also comes with new mobile software that includes such features as the ability to sync content wirelessly, without having to plug the device to a Mac or Windows machine.

The iPhone announcement came during Apple's first major product event in years without Steve Jobs presiding. New CEO Tim Cook led the show after Jobs, who has been battling health problems, resigned from the post in August.

Cook, wearing a navy blue button-down shirt and jeans, opened by calling his nearly 14-year tenure at Apple "the privilege of a lifetime." Those in the audience clapped as he entered, but the reaction seemed more muted than what Jobs had recently received.

Cook said the latest iPhone, which came out in June 2010, sold more quickly than previous models, but the iPhone still has just 5 percent of the worldwide handset market. Apple is hoping to grow that with the new model.

Apple's new mobile software, iOS 5, will also be available on Oct. 12 for existing devices ? the iPhone 4 and 3GS, both iPad models and later versions of the iPod Touch.

Apple said Oct. 12 will also mark the launch of its new iCloud service, which will store content such as music, documents, apps and photos on Apple's servers and let people access them wirelessly on numerous devices.

Apple said the new phone will come in black or white. It will cost $199 for a 16 gigabyte-version, $299 for 32 GB and $399 for 64 GB ? all with a two-year service contract requirement. It will now be available through Sprint Nextel Corp., besides the existing carriers, AT&T Inc. and Verizon Wireless.

Pre-orders will begin Friday with availability on Oct. 14.

The previous version, iPhone 4, will now cost $99 for 8 GB. The 2009 model, the iPhone 3GS, will be given away for free with 8 GB. Both also require a two-year service contract.

Apple also touted the popularity of its products and unveiled a new line of iPods, including a Nano model with a multi-touch display that promises to be easier to navigate. Apple made no mention of its Classic model, which many people had speculated the company might discontinue.

The event took place in Apple's Town Hall room, where the first iPod was launched a decade ago. Cook said Apple has sold more than 300 million iPods worldwide so far, including 45 million in the 12 months through June.

The iPhone came six years later and has gained millions of fans, thanks to its slick looks, high-resolution screen and intuitive software. There were 39 million iPhones sold in the first six months of this year.

Apple's stock fell $17.15 to $357.45 in afternoon trading Tuesday.

NYC mayor cross-examined at ex-operative's trial (AP)

NEW YORK ? Mayor Michael Bloomberg testified Monday against a former campaign operative accused of bilking him out of more than $1 million, then underwent hours of cross-examination by a defense lawyer who questioned whether he had skirted the law and came close to calling the billionaire politician a liar.

"He promised things that he didn't do," Bloomberg said of John Haggerty, who is accused of persuading the mayor and his staff to finance an expansive poll-monitoring initiative that never materialized, then using most of the cash to buy himself a house.

"Isn't that what you regularly did at Salomon Bros.?" lawyer Raymond Castello responded.

Castello asked the mayor a number of potentially uncomfortable questions, reading from a passage in his autobiography in which he said that as a businessman he had promised more than he planned to deliver, and bringing up topics that could be unpopular with voters and jurors, from his flip-flop on extending term limits to his decision to keep an aide's domestic-violence arrest private even when publicly announcing his departure.

"I don't lie," the mayor said.

Bloomberg, for his part, remained calm but wary on the stand, even when Castello raised his voice and repeatedly pointed his index finger at the mayor. Bloomberg at one point appeared bemused when he was confronted with the words from his own autobiography, smiling as he considered the passage.

The defense has sought to paint a picture of a high-rolling candidate surrounded by privileged insiders who skirted ethics rules, threw money at problems and didn't hesitate to bend the law, but prosecutors do not accuse the mayor of any wrongdoing, and Bloomberg's representatives have said his campaign broke no laws and followed standard practices.

Haggerty presented Bloomberg campaign aides with a budget for a 2009 "ballot security" operation, to be financed through a personal gift from Bloomberg to the Independence Party, the state's largest. The Democrat-turned-Republican-turned-unaffiliated Bloomberg was then running for a third term on the Independence Party, Republican and other lines.

Bloomberg said he never would have donated the money to the party if he had thought it wouldn't be used on a poll-monitoring operation.

"I know exactly what we paid $1.1 million for, and my understanding is that we did not receive that service," he said.

The defense argues that prosecutors can't prove the money was stolen from Bloomberg because the mayor's donation to the party was placed in a fund that could not legally be earmarked for a specific purpose. Bloomberg testified that he couldn't say who in the Independence Party had agreed to use the money for poll-monitoring, because Haggerty was the person responsible for forming that agreement.

The defense has sought to highlight the lack of a paper trail for some of the mayor's spending, and when asked whether he had a contract with Howard Wolfson, who handled communications for his 2009 campaign before becoming a deputy mayor, Bloomberg said: "Probably not."

"Generally I've never believed in contracts," he said. "If I look someone in the eye, and he seems trustworthy, a handshake is worth more to me than a piece of paper."

And while the defense has insinuated that the billionaire and his aides are loose with his money, on the stand Bloomberg said otherwise.

"Until you had all the documentation nobody in their right mind would send a check," said the billionaire-turned politician, who told jurors the lost money mattered to him: "We could have done a lot of good in society" with it, he said. "It's a lot of money."

Still, the mayor said under cross-examination that he had no memory of $1.2 million in contributions to the state Independence Party a year before his 2009 campaign. That money, he said after he was told of the donations, would have been given to the party with no strings attached.

Haggerty, 42, is a veteran of several prominent New York Republican campaigns. As a volunteer on Bloomberg's 2009 campaign, Haggerty was the point man on ballot security, a term used mainly by Republicans for poll watching with an eye to preventing voter fraud. Democrats in New York and elsewhere have long said it's a euphemism for suppressing votes, often in minority-heavy precincts.

Bloomberg said his ballot security operation was meant to deploy poll watchers and lawyers to every city voting site "to make sure that people who want to vote and have the right to vote don't get pushed aside."

But Castello, one of Haggerty's lawyers, suggested the effort had a different bent, saying Bloomberg had asked Haggerty, "How are you going to keep them from stealing the election?" Bloomberg said he didn't recall such a conversation and had never had a substantive discussion of any kind with Haggerty.

Haggerty lawyers argue that Bloomberg paid for the operation through the Independence Party to distance himself from the practice, especially because state Democrats had complained about his involvement with it in 2005.

Wasn't it fair to say the term has "a negative connotation?" Castello asked Bloomberg.

"In some periods in our history, in some parts of the country, yes. I don't think so in New York," said the mayor, who said he thought paying for the poll-monitoring through the party instead of as a campaign expense was both legal and proper, since it benefited all candidates on the Independence Party line.

Haggerty presented Bloomberg campaign aides with a $1.1 million budget that included more than 1,300 paid poll watchers, an office, two-way radios and other expenses, according to prosecution filings and documents aired at the trial. Prosecutors say Haggerty did little of what he promised and used about $750,000 of the money to buy his brother's share of their late father's home.
